Kia Garfield is a dedicated Trainee Solicitor at Cocks Lloyd, who transitioned from the Family Department, where she supported public law care proceedings, to the Conveyancing Department as part of her training contract. With three years of experience, Kia is committed to gaining well-rounded legal training, allowing her to explore a variety of departments and acquire diverse skills to fully prepare for her future legal career.
Kia began her journey in the Family Department, providing crucial support to fee earners and staff in cases involving public law care proceedings. Working with vulnerable clients, she developed a gentle and empathetic approach, ensuring that each client fully understood the court process, tailoring her communication to meet individual needs. Her experience in family law has equipped her with invaluable skills and has shaped her ability to handle sensitive situations with care and professionalism.
Kia chose a broad training contract because she values the opportunity to gain experience in different areas of law. She believes this approach will equip her with the necessary knowledge and skills to make an informed decision about which department she would like to specialise in after completing her training.
What Kia loves most about her job is the variety and challenges it brings. Each day in the office is different, and she takes great satisfaction in knowing she has helped clients during some of the most difficult and anxious times of their lives. Her dedication to going above and beyond for her clients is a testament to her passion for the legal profession, and she embraces the challenges that come with it.
A highlight of Kia’s career so far has been being offered her training contract, which is a significant step toward qualifying as a solicitor. It represents the culmination of her hard work and dedication to her legal career.
Outside of work, Kia enjoys walking, travelling, and spending time on holidays. She also loves watching her son play football on Sundays, though she admits she’s still trying to grasp the offside rule!
